US–Canada cross-border tax

Living, working, or investing across the Canada–US border creates filing obligations in both countries. We help you meet them correctly and plan for what's ahead.

Who we help

We work with US citizens and green-card holders living in Canada, Canadians with US income, property, or business interests, dual citizens, and people relocating in either direction. If your tax picture touches both countries, that is exactly the work we do every day.

Our focus

Cross-border tax is where we spend our time

Moving between Canada and the United States creates overlapping filing obligations in both countries. We help individuals and businesses meet those obligations correctly and plan ahead for the tax consequences.

In detail

What we handle

Dual Canada–US filing

Coordinated preparation of your Canadian and US returns so credits, deductions, and treaty positions line up across both systems instead of being handled in isolation.

Foreign account reporting

FBAR (FinCEN 114) and FATCA (Form 8938) reporting for non-US accounts, plus the related information returns that often accompany cross-border holdings.

Departure & arrival tax

Planning for the deemed disposition on leaving Canada, and the step-up and residency-start considerations when arriving — before the move, where possible.

ITIN applications (IRS CAA)

As a Certifying Acceptance Agent, we verify your identity documents directly and submit your Form W-7, so you don't mail your passport to the IRS.

FIRPTA on US real property

Withholding and reporting when a non-US person sells US real estate, including withholding-certificate applications to reduce over-withholding where eligible.

Treaty-based positions

Applying the Canada–US tax treaty to help avoid double taxation, including the disclosures required when a treaty position is taken on a return.

What to expect

Cross-border files reward planning. Wherever we can, we look at the year ahead — not just the return in front of us — so decisions about residency, timing, and structure are made with the tax consequences understood in advance. Every engagement is scoped and quoted before work begins, and reviewed by a CPA throughout.
