Frequently asked questions
Answers to the questions we hear most often about cross-border tax, ITIN applications, filings, and working with us. Search below or browse the list.
Do you handle both Canadian and US tax returns?
Yes. We prepare Canadian personal and corporate returns, and US individual returns for clients with US filing obligations. Cross-border situations where both apply are our main focus.
What does an IRS Certifying Acceptance Agent do?
As a Certifying Acceptance Agent authorized by the IRS, we can verify your identity documents for an ITIN application in person or by video, so you do not need to mail your passport to the IRS.
How do I apply for an ITIN through you?
We confirm your eligibility, verify your identity documents as a Certifying Acceptance Agent, prepare your Form W-7, and submit it with the return or documentation the IRS requires — without you mailing original passports.
I'm a US citizen living in Canada — can you help?
Yes. This is a core part of our practice. We coordinate your US and Canadian filings, handle FBAR/FATCA reporting, and apply treaty positions to help avoid double taxation.
I'm a Canadian with US income or property — do I need to file in the US?
Often, yes — US income, US real property, or certain business activity can create a US filing obligation. We'll assess your situation and handle both sides if a US return is required.
What are FBAR and FATCA?
They are US foreign-account reporting requirements. FBAR (FinCEN 114) and FATCA (Form 8938) apply to certain non-US financial accounts and assets. We determine what applies to you and prepare the filings.
What is departure (or exit) tax?
When you cease Canadian residency, Canada generally treats certain property as sold at fair market value (a deemed disposition). We plan for and report this, ideally before the move.
What is FIRPTA?
FIRPTA is US withholding that applies when a non-US person sells US real estate. We handle the withholding, reporting, and, where eligible, applications to reduce over-withholding.
Do you handle both personal and corporate tax?
Yes — Canadian personal (T1) and corporate (T2) returns, plus US individual returns where required. Corporate advisory and owner compensation planning are available as advisory engagements.
Who do you work with?
Individuals and businesses with connections on both sides of the Canada–US border — US citizens living in Canada, Canadians with US income or property, dual citizens, and people relocating between the two countries.
How are your fees structured?
After an initial consultation we set out a defined scope and a fixed fee in writing, so you know the cost before any work begins.
How do I get started?
Book a consultation through our contact page or by phone. We'll discuss your situation, confirm scope and fee in writing, and send a document checklist.
How do we work together — in person or remotely?
Most work is handled remotely through secure document sharing and video calls, with in-person meetings available in Toronto when helpful.
Where are you located?
We serve clients from Toronto, and work with people across North America by phone and video.
Do you have team members who speak Russian?
Yes. Our bilingual team can work with clients in English and Russian across our US and international engagements.
Is my information kept secure?
Yes. We collect only what we need, share documents through secure channels, and handle personal information in line with our Privacy Policy and applicable privacy law.
Do you provide audit or assurance services?
No. We focus on tax and advisory only, and do not provide audit, review, or other assurance engagements.
Are you a CPA firm?
TYM Professional Corporation is a CPA-led advisory firm in Ontario, led by Elena Serebryany, CPA, CA (Ontario) and US CPA (Florida).
Can you help if I'm behind on filings?
Yes. We regularly help clients bring prior-year Canadian and US filings up to date and understand the options for doing so correctly.
Do you offer year-round support or only at tax time?
Both. Beyond seasonal filings, our advisory engagements support decisions throughout the year, particularly for cross-border moves and business changes.
